Beware- its a Rant

So I have never really understood insurance companies! Can anyone please explain to me why they work the way they do? Sometimes I wonder what is the point? For example .....

They will pay 100% of the antibiotics that we need for Evan when he is sick, but they will not pay for a cough assist machine which will prevent him from getting sick. How does that make sense? For a child like Evan he gets sick very easily because of his SMA. When he gets sick, he is sick for a long time and we have to be on antibiotics for a long time. I know that initially the medicine is cheaper for them to pay for, but when you look at the long scheme of things if they shelled out the money for a cough assist they would actually end up paying less! And the worst part is that we are paying them for their stupidity!!

So of course now we have to find an extra butt-load of cash lying around so we can buy Evan a cough assist before the cold weather comes with all of its nasty diseases floating around.

There aren't any tax breaks for preventative medicine. Also, they get a kickback from the doctors every time you go to the hospital. They may pay money on your antibiotics but this is viewed no more as an obligation for your premiums and the kickback for you going to the doctor. If they keep Evan from getting sick, they get no kickbacks, no gaurantee of long-term service, and no tax breaks. Therefore it makes more economical sense to only pay for antibiotics. (which doesnt really cost them a lot anyway since they pay in bulk and charge at a premium).

Oh sista! I'm soooo feeling your pain. Insurance companies... oh I just won't go into it.. that would take to long to vent. You hit it on the head for sure.. Why do we pay for insurance and they dont' cover what we NEED! Hang in there.. blessings will come in one form or another and you will be able to get what you need for your little man. It always works out.. big hugs!

Ooo boy! You posted this in the same week, that we've been fighting insurance companies for for more than a year over stupid things. I can't figure them out either. Rant away! I totally hear you and say "Amen!"

Hope things go better. I am so sorry for your bad week.

I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles. I used to think insurance was a really good idea--I mean total coverage insurance. But for most people and situations I think catastrophe insurance (high deductibles) is better than traditional health insurance policies. But in your situation I'd probably keep what you have (b/c Evan get sick so often, etc). Anyhow, wanted to tell you that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the feet picture. Love you much! Hope to see you sometime.

Amen, Kira! I think healthcare is sometimes too much sickcare and not enough healthcare. Sorry you have to deal with that. :(
